How to install flexible stone veneer: adhesive, cutting, curves and joints

By the GM La Surfaces team · Updated

Short answer

Flexible stone veneer is bonded to a clean, sound, dry wall with an adhesive, not fixed with mortar. Flexi Stone uses a hybrid PU adhesive to IS 15477:2019 Type 5, applied between 10 and 30 °C. Sheets are cut with ordinary tools and pressed in place; never install over a damp wall or rising damp.

Which surfaces can it go on?

The Flexi Stone catalogue lists concrete, cement render, brick, gypsum and drywall, plywood and wood, metal and existing tile. Whatever the base, it must be firm, flat, clean and dry.

Installation steps

A typical sequence. Your applicator will adapt it to the wall.

  • Check the wall: no damp, no loose plaster, no flaking paint. Fix those first.
  • Dry-lay the sheets to plan the pattern, since every sheet varies.
  • Cut sheets to size with a sharp blade or fine-toothed saw, stone face up.
  • Spread the PU adhesive evenly on the wall, and on the back of the sheet where the applicator advises.
  • Press the sheet into place and work out air from the centre outwards.
  • Finish edges and joints, then seal if the stone and the location call for it.

Curves, columns and arches

The backing flexes, so a sheet can follow a curve in one piece. Bend it gradually and test the curve before adhesive goes on; a tight radius on a brittle stone needs more care than a gentle one.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Installing on a damp wall, or where rising damp is present. The adhesive maker rules this out.
  • Working outside 10 to 30 °C, the adhesive's application range.
  • Placing sheets without dry-laying first, then finding a mismatched shade in the middle of the wall.
  • Using it on high-traffic floors. Flexi Stone floors are for light residential, decorative use only.

Common questions

What adhesive is used for flexible stone veneer?
Flexi Stone is installed with Uniclad Hybrid PU Adhesive, which meets IS 15477:2019 Type 5. Coverage is about 4 to 5 sq ft per kg.
Can I cut flexible stone veneer with scissors?
Thinner sheets cut with heavy-duty shears or a sharp blade; for clean edges most applicators use a fine-toothed saw or grinder. Cut with the stone face up.
Do I need a professional installer?
For feature walls, columns and anything exterior, yes. GM La Surfaces provides guidance for applicators, from substrate preparation to finishing.
Can it go behind a stove or fireplace?
Only with a non-combustible backing and the manufacturer's clearances, and never inside a firebox. Ask the team before planning it near a heat source.
