Flexible stone veneer outdoors, near fire and on floors: an honest answer

By the GM La Surfaces team · Updated

Short answer

The stone face of a veneer sheet does not burn, but its backing does. Flexi Stone is not individually fire-rated, so GM La Surfaces does not offer it for a regulated facade without a project assembly fire test certificate. On floors it is for light residential, decorative use only. Exterior walls depend on exposure and are confirmed per project.

Is flexible stone veneer safe on a building facade?

For high-rise and commercial buildings, facade materials are regulated under the National Building Code of India and local rules. A combustible backing means veneer is not a non-combustible cladding. GM La Surfaces does not claim fire compliance for those facades unless the whole assembly, wall to adhesive to sheet, has been fire tested for that project.

Some sellers describe flexible stone as fireproof. Fire behaviour depends on the backing and the adhesive, so treat any blanket claim with caution and ask for the test certificate.

Can it be used outside?

Exterior use depends on how exposed the wall is, the substrate, drainage and detailing. In Pune, monsoon rain and strong sun are the real test. The team looks at the specific wall before recommending veneer outside, and will say so plainly when another surface is the better choice.

Can I use it on a floor?

Only for light residential, decorative floors, and only after GM confirms the wear for your space. It is not for high-traffic or commercial floors.

What about bathrooms and kitchens?

Wet and hot areas each bring their own questions: splash or standing water, steam, cleaning chemicals, heat from a hob. Share the exact location and the team will tell you what suits it.

Common questions

Is flexible stone veneer fire rated?
Flexi Stone is not individually fire-rated. Its backing is combustible (around Class B2 under DIN 4102). Do not use it where a fire-rated cladding is required without a project assembly test.
Will it fade in the sun?
Natural stone itself is colour-stable, but finishes, sealers and adhesives age outdoors. Exposure is assessed per wall before any exterior recommendation.
Can I use stone veneer on my balcony floor?
Floor use is limited to light residential, decorative floors and needs GM's confirmation. A balcony floor exposed to rain and foot traffic is usually better served by a dedicated outdoor flooring.
