Flexible stone veneer vs marble cladding, stone tiles and PU stone panels

By the GM La Surfaces team · Updated

Short answer

Choose marble slabs or stone tiles when you want thick, solid stone and the wall can carry the weight. Choose flexible stone veneer when you want real stone on a curve, a column, a lightweight partition or an existing wall without heavy fixing. Faux PU panels are a printed or moulded look, not stone.

Weight and structure

Solid marble and stone cladding tiles are heavy and need a wall built to hold them, with mortar or mechanical anchors. A veneer sheet weighs a fraction of that and is bonded with adhesive, which makes it practical on drywall, plywood and existing tile where a slab would be a structural question.

Look and feel

All three real-stone options give you genuine stone texture. A slab shows depth at its edges and can be polished to a mirror finish. Veneer shows the natural face of the stone, often with a riven or honed texture, and its edges are thin, so corners are detailed differently.

PU stone panels copy the look in a moulded pattern that repeats. From a distance they read as stone; up close, and to the touch, they do not.

Curves, columns and arches

This is where veneer is clearly different. A rigid slab cannot follow a curve without being cut into narrow strips. A flexible sheet wraps it in one piece, so round columns and curved walls keep a continuous stone face.

Installation and time on site

Slabs and tiles need cutting with stone tools, wet work and curing. Veneer is cut with simpler tools and bonded with a PU adhesive, which usually means less mess and a faster finish. Either way, the substrate must be sound, flat and dry.

Fire and exterior use

Solid stone does not burn. Veneer has a combustible backing, so it is not a like-for-like substitute for stone cladding on a regulated facade. GM La Surfaces does not claim fire compliance there without a project assembly fire test certificate.

Common questions

Is flexible stone veneer cheaper than marble?
It depends on the stone, the area and the labour. Veneer often saves on structure and installation time, while the material cost per sheet varies by stone. Ask for a quote on both for your wall.
Which looks more natural, veneer or PU stone panels?
Veneer, because it is real stone. PU panels are moulded copies with a repeating pattern.
Can veneer go over existing tiles?
Existing tile is one of the substrates the Flexi Stone catalogue lists, provided it is sound, clean and dry. The team checks the wall before recommending it.
Can I polish flexible stone veneer like a marble floor?
No. Veneer shows the natural face of the stone and is not ground and polished like a thick slab.
