How to choose surfaces for a room: a checklist for homeowners and architects
By the GM La Surfaces team · Updated
Short answer
Start with where the surface goes and what it must survive (water, sun, heat, foot traffic, fire rules), then choose the look within what qualifies. See real samples in the room's own light before deciding, and ask the supplier for written specs on anything functional.
1. Where does it go, and what must it survive?
- Wall, floor, ceiling, column, furniture?
- Inside, protected outside, or fully exposed to rain and sun?
- Dry, humid, splashed, or under standing water?
- Near heat: a hob, a fireplace, hot lights?
- Light footfall, a busy home, or commercial traffic?
- Is it a facade or space where fire rules apply?
2. What is behind it?
The substrate decides the fixing. Concrete, brick, drywall, plywood, metal and old tile each need different preparation, and none of them should be damp. A surface that fails is more often a substrate problem than a product problem.
3. Then choose the look
Decide tone (warm, cool or neutral), depth (light, mid or dark) and pattern (calm and even, or bold and veined). Then look at texture: matte, honed or riven surfaces hide wear and read warmer; polished ones reflect light and show marks.
If you are unsure where to begin, describe the room or upload a photo to the AI Surface Advisor. It suggests surfaces only from GM La Surfaces' own catalogue.
4. See samples in the room
Showroom light and your room's light are different. Natural stone also varies sheet to sheet. Take samples home, look at them morning and evening, and on stone walls view the actual sheets before installation.
5. Questions to ask any supplier
- Is this product rated for my exact use, in writing?
- What is the fire rating, and is there a test certificate for the assembly?
- Which adhesive or fixing system, and who installs it?
- What care does it need, and what voids the warranty?
- What is the lead time for my quantity?
Common questions
- How do I get samples from GM La Surfaces?
- Call or WhatsApp +91 98506 51473, email gmlasurface@gmail.com, or visit the showroom in Market Yard, Pune. Tell the team the surfaces you are considering and they will arrange samples.
- Should I choose the floor or the walls first?
- Usually the floor, since it covers the most area and takes the most wear. Then choose walls that work with it.
- What surfaces are trending in Indian interiors in 2026?
- Warm minimalism: honed and textured stone, fluted panels, seamless mineral finishes, curved forms and matte surfaces. See the seasonal trends on this site for more.
- Does GM La Surfaces work with architects?
- Yes. The team works with architects, interior designers, contractors and homeowners, from specification to samples and delivery.
